History made as Torquay women claim first flag
February 27, 2022
Torquay is celebrating its first women’s premiership, after defeating Modewarre by four wickets in the BWCC C Grade Grand Final at Armstrong Creek.
Bowling first, the Tigers did their best to contain a strong Warriors batting line-up, who reached 4-122 from their 20 overs.
Andriana Oliver was the pick of the Torquay bowlers with a tight 1-14 from her four overs, while Isabella Dunne, Ash Walpole and Tia McGrath also claimed wickets.
Needing to make their highest score of the season to win, the Tigers’ batters were remarkably cool under pressure, cruising to their target six wickets down with more than two overs to spare.
Teenager Dunne was the top-scorer with the bat, guiding her team home with 22 not out, while Hayley Pocklington was the next best with 18 before being run out.
The Grand Final victory is a significant milestone in the history of the club, coming in just the third year of the women’s program.
